Smog gets in your eyes

Just a quick post this morning because I’m running behind schedule. I had to get my car smog checked, as all Californians do every two years. A lot of people complain about it, but I happen to enjoy clear air, so I’m not one of them. It isn’t fun though.

In 1975 California exceeded stage 1 smog alerts on 118 days. In 1995 that number had been reduced to 7 days. By the year 2000, there were no stage 1 smog alerts, despite over 40 billion additional vehicle miles traveled in the state of California compared to 1975.

The measures taken by the state of California to reduce smog reminds me that we used to be able to get big things done in this state. The auto companies and glibertarians complained loudly that requiring catalytic converters on cars sold in our state was a horrible infringement on personal liberty and burdensome regulation to auto manufacturers that would destroy the industry. It didn’t. Please remember that any time these companies and people complain about regulation.
