So apparently Rick Santorum had a clean sweep tonight in the three contests of Missouri, Colorado, and Minnesota. CNN just showed the Colorado Republican Party Chairman calling his state for Santorum. Final numbers haven’t been posted yet as I’m typing this, but it looks like Santorum around 40% and Romney about 35%.
Missouri and Minnesota weren’t even close with Santorum taking 55% and 45%, respectively. And now, after 8 Republican contests, Rick Santorum has won the most states with four, three for Romney, and one for Newt.
Of course, in keeping with the craziness that is the 2012 GOP nomination contest, tonight’s Missouri vote doesn’t even count, but still, a win is a win for Santorum.
I said after Nevada that it looked like Romney’s support had become pretty uniform, and I really thought he was going to cruise to the nomination. He still might; in fact, I wouldn’t put any money against Romney winning, but man, this is crazy.
In 2008, Mitt Romney won the Colorado caucuses with 60% of the vote. This year, as the front-runner he gets only 35% of the vote? What should also be troubling for the GOP is, as inuyesta has been pointing out, turnout was down compared to 2008.
By the way, if anyone was watching CNN’s coverage tonight, my favorite part was the Zapruder-like treatment they gave a glitter bomb attack on Mitt Romney. As Wolf Blitzer would say: dramatic!
