One of the silver linings in the dark cloud that is Rush Limbaugh is that he illustrated pretty clearly that the conservative freakout over contraception isn’t really about religious freedom; it’s about slut shaming, pure and simple.
For those who are clutching their pearls that liberals are daring to call out conservatives over their misogyny, I will play once again, the 53 attacks of Limbaugh on Sandra Fluke. Watch that, and defend him, if you must.
Of course, Limbaugh is lying through his teeth all throughout that video. Sandra Fluke never said anything about her own sexuality or how much sex co-eds at Georgetown were having. Anyone who understands how contraception actually works knows that.
And this was never about taxpayer money funding contraception. Fluke wants the health insurance that she pays for through Georgetown to cover contraception coverage. Period. No taxes involved. Rush needed to figure out a plausible way to call Fluke a prostitute. He wanted to call her a prostitute, so he invented the tax lie.
Jehovah’s Witnesses do not believe in blood transfusions. They have Bible verses (Gen 9:4, Lev 17:10, Acts 15:29) to support their beliefs and everything. But don’t worry: If you work for a company that is owned by a Jehovah’s Witness, your health insurance provided through that company will still cover blood transfusions. Where’s the outrage? Has anyone asked Mike Huckabee if we are all Jehovah’s Witnesses now?
Can you imagine Rush Limbaugh railing for three days about some guy who wants blood transfusions covered in his health insurance policy? “He is having so much blood injected into him, that he can’t afford it! What does that make him? Well, it makes him a vampire!”
This isn’t about religious freedom, and it’s not about taxes. It’s about slut shaming. It’s about attacking anyone who dares to speak out. It’s about sending a message to all women that if you don’t shut up and do what you’re told, this is the treatment you can expect.
UPDATED: Commentor Danny Haszard notes:
Jehovah’s Witnesses can take Bovine *cows blood* as long as it is euphemistically called synthetic Hemopure.
In light of the title of my post, I’m tempted to make a True Blood reference, and in fact, I guess I just did.
But seriously, thanks for the info and the post Danny.
